Waaaaaayyyyy back in the day, there was a rum producer in Newburyport that was known throughout the world - Caldwell’s Rum. What made them world renown? When ships would leave Newburyport they would stock up on rum for their long voyages. Made from Molasses, this rum could withstand long trips.
Fast forward a few decades, and the Newburyport area is once again producing world class adult beverages that are being recognized all over the place.
North of Boston Visitors & Convention Bureau recently created a ‘Sip, Suds & Spirits’ Guide to many of our local breweries, wineries and distilleries. It’s a great guide to pick up if you want to explore the flavors of New England. Make it a day trip with friends or out of town guests [with a designated driver].
We’d like to feature a few of our favorites:
Mill River Winery – Located 10 minutes from downtown Newburyport on Route 1, they are celebrating their 5th year in business with many new releases and special events throughout the year. What not to miss: their new artist series with artwork on the label from local artist David Ten Eyck. Oh, and ask about their Wine Club!
Newburyport Brewing Company – Located in the Industrial Park, they aim to capture the essence of Newburyport’s quaint seaside character across a line of great tasting handcrafted ales. They celebrate being local, with live concerts, local art and special events! What not to miss: Das Kolsch and their ‘1635 Small Batch Series.’
Riverwalk Brewing Company – They have been brewing their own brand of unique beers in Newburyport, MA since 2012. Building on the traditions of the great brewing cultures of the world, RiverWalk is a family owned business with strong ties to the community. What not to miss: Their flagship IPA and Winter Porter.
These three businesses have helped to, once again, put Newburyport on the map for craft beverage connoisseurs. If you aren’t able to get ‘right to the source’, most of the local restaurants and package stores are proud to support these local businesses and serve their beverages!
