Newburyport is known throughout New England as a community of charm and beauty. One of the things that makes Newburyport so special is the ambiance of downtown. Each summer the Chamber of Commerce adorns each light post with colorful hanging baskets. Shopkeepers and building owners throughout the downtown complement these baskets with colorful and creative window boxes, filled with flowers, herbs, vines and other greenery. These displays have become a signature of Newburyport's downtown.
Inn Street
Inn Street in downtown Newburyport, one of the port’s earliest streets, was a narrow crowded little pathway full of small wooden buildings. In 1975, the Inn Street Mall was constructed as part of the Urban Renewal Program. The successful conversion was awarded a citation for design excellence by the Boston Society of Architects in 1984.
Today you can stroll in and out of the fine shops lining the historic brick path. There is everything from historical artwork and maps to clothing and home décor. You will find interesting antiques and fine art, along with imported specialties.

Downtown
In nearby Market Square, residents burned tea in 1773 - before the more famous Boston Tea Party - to protest British taxes. Today across from the Firehouse Center, the open space of the “Bullnose” welcomes strollers to the heart of the city. Market Square, State Street, Pleasant Street, Merrimac Landing and adjoining side streets feature a variety of boutiques, banks, bookstores, import shops, salons, cafés and food shops. Enjoy the constant surprises.

The Tannery Marketplace
A short walk up Water Street from downtown brings you to The Tannery Marketplace, a restored complex of old leather mill buildings now housing a variety of shops, services and eateries. You will find salons, a bookstore, home décor and design, a cheese and gourmet foods store, a toy shop, bakeries, a cafe, along with restaurants and much more.
Other clusters of shops include Horton’s Yard, the Atkinson Building, the Traffic Circle and Storey Avenue. Horton’s Yard located on Merrimac Street downtown is home to boutiques, a full service salon and fine cabinetry & furniture studio. The Atkinson Building on Water Street is just up the road from the Custom House as you head toward the Tannery Marketplace. The Rte 1 Traffic Circle area on upper State Street is convenient for a quick bite, banking, pet supplies, flooring, basic provisions and hardware. The MBTA commuter rail is also located here. On Storey Avenue / Rte 113 - just off Rte 95 - you will find a shopping plaza containing many businesses including a shoe store, AAA travel agency, grocery and clothing stores, banks, pharmacy, several restaurants and many other necessities.
