Newburyport’s first Yankee Homecoming celebration was held in 1958 as a way to reinvigorate community pride and interest in the downtown. Over 50 years later, this annual celebration is the second oldest remaining festival in the country. Yankee Homecoming always begins on the last Sunday of July and runs for 8 days.
You will find endless activities to take part in all around the downtown. Free Waterfront Concerts take place every evening in Waterfront Park behind the Firehouse Center for the Arts. Shop around town on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for the highly anticipated Sidewalk Sale days where you can get lots of great bargains from our many unique shops! Participate in the road race, bed race, Art on Bartlett Mall, Family Day at Maudslay State Park, Kid’s Talent Show, Greek Food Festival, Craft Fair and more! Every day you will find free music in Market Square and the delicious smell of food from outdoor vendors.
On Saturday night, enjoy a fabulous Fireworks display over the Merrimack River beginning at 9:15 PM. View them from several waterfront parks, the boardwalk or by boat! This 8 day celebration culminates with a grand parade down High Street on the last Sunday of the event beginning at 12:30 PM. Be sure to bring the kids and grab a spot along the parade route and take in this spirited event complete with floats, fire engines and lots of fun!
